Four models that ship with Quantik, from a half-million-dollar council road job to a $54M highway set up for four funding authorities. Every number below comes from a Quantik run: 10,000 iterations, Latin Hypercube sampling, seed 42.
| Example | Base | Shows you |
|---|---|---|
| Bayview | $0.52M | The simplest QRA: ranged sections, a short register, opportunities. |
| BOQ risk model | Example job | The full workbook: BOQ ranges, sectioned register, matrix, drivers, schedule, escalation, governance. |
| Detailed highway job | $54.1M | What correlation, range reading and method do to the P90. |
| Authority templates | $54.1M | The highway job set up for the Commonwealth, Queensland, NSW and Victoria. |
01 · Bayview road upgrade
File: examples\Example QRA - Bayview.xlsx
A council road upgrade: site clearing, earthworks, pavement and surfacing, drainage, concrete, driveways and provisional items. It is built the way most first QRAs are, and it is the workbook used in your first run.
The model
- Inherent sheet: nine estimate sections with a base cost and a percentage range each, as
=SYN.PERT(C2*(1+D2), C2*(1+E2), C2*(1+F2), SYN.NAME(B2)). - Risks sheet: eight contingent risks as
SYN.BERNOULLI(p) × SYN.PERT(min, ml, max). Seven are "Possible" (37.5%); tree removal is "Unlikely" (17.5%). - Opportunities sheet: two opportunities, a competitive tender market and a good cut/fill balance.
- Summary sheet:
=SYN.OUTPUT("Total project cost", inherent + risks − opportunities).
| Section | Base | Range |
|---|---|---|
| General items | $125,525 | −5% / 0 / +10% |
| Site clearing | $25,349 | −8% / 0 / +15% |
| Earthworks | $73,763 | −10% / 0 / +20% |
| Pavement and surfacing | $257,790 | −8% / 0 / +15% |
| Drainage | $13,397 | −10% / 0 / +20% |
| Concrete works, driveways, miscellaneous | $24,937 | −5% to −8% / 0 / +10% to +15% |
| Provisional items | $2,080 | −15% / 0 / +30% |
| Base estimate | $522,841 |
The result, and the lesson
The same model was run with its ranges read two ways: as hard minimum and maximum (the SYN.PERT workbook) and as P10/P90 (the same model written with RiskPertAlt, as Cenex's @RISK workbooks were).
| Ranges read as | P50 | P90 | P90 contingency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Min / max | $556,725 | $590,916 | $68,075 (13.0%) |
| P10 / P90 | $570,026 | $621,209 | $98,368 (18.8%) |
Same ranges, same risks: a 44% larger P90 contingency purely from how the ranges are read. Decide it deliberately, and use SYN.RANGE so the decision is one setting.
The earthworks range overlaps the "earthworks cut/fill imbalance" risk and the "good cut/fill balance" opportunity, and "material price escalation" is a risk although escalation is excluded from the estimate. A QRA review should catch both; no tool can detect double counting on its own.
This model was also used to prove the add-in: run through Excel and through Quantik's engine, every one of the 10,000 iterations matched to floating-point rounding.
02 · The BOQ risk model

File: examples\Example QRA - BOQ Risk Model.xlsx
A complete, governed QRA built on a bill of quantities. It is the template the authority versions are built from, and the best place to see every Quantik feature in context.
| Sheet | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Read Me | Purpose, how to use it, and the modelling choices to confirm. |
| Governance | ISO 31000 records: risk appetite, treatment and escalation by rating, register health, an automatic method statement, workshops, sign-off, change log, and a standards checklist. |
| Assumptions & Exclusions | 12 assumptions (basis, consequence if wrong, linked item, owner) and 9 exclusions with who carries each. Escalation is excluded and calculated separately. |
| Range Basis | Default low / most likely / high ranges by quantity basis (lump sum, measured from detailed design, 3D model or preliminary layout, factored) and rate basis (quote, recent tender, first principles, benchmark, allowance). Editable. |
| BOQ - Inherent | 30 items in seven sections, quantity × rate. Each item's quantity and rate range is looked up from Range Basis by its basis; type over a range to override it (shown orange). Lump sums carry no quantity range. A time-related column links items to the schedule. |
| BOQ - Contingent | The register in sections (principal's, shared, contractor's, opportunities, unidentified), before and after controls, with treatment, owners, review dates, programme-delay and GN3A screening columns. |
| Risk Matrix | 5 × 5 criteria, heat maps before and after controls and for opportunities, and risks ranked by residual rating. |
| Risk Drivers | Drivers × BOQ sections, each section's combined factor, and six default road drivers. |
| Schedule | A 30-week base programme × an inherent range, plus programme-delay risks; links time-related costs when switched on. |
| Risk Model | The simulation layer: method switch, ρ within and between sections, residual or unmitigated, principal's or whole-of-project view, LPHC treatment, outputs and a live results block. |
| Escalation | Rates and spend share by financial year give a weighted factor (1.073 in the example) that takes base, P50 and P90 to outturn. |
| Estimate Maturity | Stage, AACE class and data quality, checked against expected accuracy, an indicative contingency band and a reference-class outside view. |
Try: run it, then open Contingency, Sensitivity and Browse Results. Switch Risk Model B8 between Residual and Unmitigated, and compare the two with Scenarios.
03 · Detailed highway job
A regional highway upgrade, generated to exercise Quantik at realistic scale and reviewed page by page in a 27-page QRA review pack.
03.1 · The line-item baseline
Run as line-item ranging (137 uncertain inputs, ranges as min/max, ρ = 0.3 within each BOQ section, sections independent), the client report reads:
The base sitting at P3 is expected, because every Range Basis default is skewed upwards. But a P50 → P90 spread of only 3.3% on a business-case estimate is narrow, and the Estimate Maturity sheet says so. That prompted the method work below.
03.2 · What moves the P90
First, the 0.6 review: sections independent of each other, and risk impacts read as min/max whatever the setting.
| Change from the baseline | P50 | P90 | P90 contingency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline (min/max, ρ 0.3 within sections) | $56.76M | $58.63M | 8.3% |
| ρ = 0 (independent) | $56.79M | $58.40M | 7.9% |
| ρ = 0.9 within sections | $56.75M | $59.03M | 9.1% |
| Risks before controls (unmitigated) | $57.80M | $59.69M | 10.3% |
| Ranges read as P10/P90 | $59.90M | $63.33M | 17.0% |
| Monte Carlo, 1,000 iterations | $56.74M | $58.62M | 8.3% |
Correlation within sections barely matters, because the eight sections still average each other out. Quantik 0.7 adds correlation between sections and the risk-driver method:
| Quantik 0.7 setting | P90 contingency |
|---|---|
| Line-item ranging, sections independent (0.6 behaviour) | 7.9% |
| Line-item ranging, ρ 0.3 between sections (0.7 default) | 13.3% |
| Risk drivers (Commonwealth, NSW and Victoria templates) | 16.2% |
| Correlation test, ρ = 1 | 20.5% |
The Quantik 0.7.1 Scenarios command runs these what-ifs together on the same random numbers (10,000 iterations, seed 42, ρ 0.3 between sections). In 0.7.1 the P10/P90 reading also applies to risk impacts:
| Scenario (0.7.1) | P90 | P90 change | P90 contingency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline | $61,325,049 | $0 | 13.3% |
| Before controls (unmitigated) | $62,362,834 | +$1,037,785 | 15.2% |
| Ranges read as P10/P90 | $69,779,150 | +$8,454,101 | 28.9% |
| Risk-driver method | $62,644,479 | +$1,319,430 | 15.8% |
| BOQ sections independent | $58,645,809 | −$2,679,240 | 8.4% |
| Programme linked to time-related costs | $60,512,000 | −$813,050 | 11.8% |
The correlation test puts numbers on it: at P90 the gap between ρ = 0 and ρ = 1 is $6,817,065, and the line-item model with 0.3 between sections sits 42% of the way across it.
03.3 · The risk-driver result
With risk drivers (47 inputs, ρ 0.3 within and between sections, 10,000 iterations in 19 seconds):
| Value | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Base estimate | $54,117,750 | Base date |
| Project estimate P50 | $58,606,767 | Base date; contingency $4,489,017 (8.3%) |
| Project estimate P90 | $62,890,606 | Base date; contingency $8,772,856 (16.2%) |
| Outturn P50 | $63,100,787 | Escalated, factor 1.0767 |
| Outturn P90 | $67,713,115 | Escalated |
| P90 precision | ±$103,949 | 95% interval |
03.4 · Schedule and joint confidence
With the Schedule linked, time-related items follow the simulated duration and programme-delay risks add weeks instead of being priced as weeks × rate.
03.5 · Top risks
| ID | Risk | Expected value | Reasonable worst case |
|---|---|---|---|
| S01 | Rock in cut beyond the provisional quantity | $178,500 | $1,008,000 |
| P08 | Scope change from council and stakeholder requests | $121,042 | $1,500,000 |
| P09 | Design development and road safety audit changes | $117,500 | $640,000 |
| P03 | Energy authority delay to power relocation (standing time) | $113,344 | $558,000 |
| P10 | Deeper bridge piles (latent foundation conditions) | $104,650 | $1,170,000 |
| P06 | Additional environmental offsets (EPBC referral) | $95,667 | $1,200,000 |
Note the gap between expected value and worst case on P06 and P08: these are the lines to check against the LPHC screening thresholds.
04 · Authority templates
Folder: examples\authority templates. Each template is the full BOQ risk model set up the way one authority asks, with a summary sheet in that authority's format, worked on the highway job. Replace the BOQ, register, drivers and programme with your own project's.
Every template includes Risk Model, Risk Drivers and Schedule set to the authority's method; ρ 0.3 between sections; the correlation test; P90 precision; a run log; a P5–P95 table at 5% steps, unescalated; and the Results sheet with tornado, regression and rank table.
The templates help meet each authority's requirements; they are not a substitute for the authority's own templates or forms. Items marked "to confirm" in the template guide are not settled by the published documents. The Commonwealth PCB workbook is issued to the states and must still be completed.
04.1 · Commonwealth: DITRDCA (GN3A)
Method: risk drivers (GN3A prefers risk factors). Schedule linked. Escalation outside contingency (GN4).
| Five-value summary | Amount |
|---|---|
| Base estimate | $54,117,750 |
| Project estimate P50 / P90 (base date) | $58,606,767 / $62,890,606 |
| Outturn estimate P50 / P90 | $63,100,787 / $67,713,115 |
Also: base estimate by PCB Level 1–3 category reconciled to the BOQ, annual cash flow by financial year in base-date and outturn dollars, and a GN3A checklist.
04.2 · Queensland: TMR PCEM 9th edition
Method: line-item ranging ("planned" risk) plus the register ("unplanned"). Funded level P90 (QTRIP budget). Summary in the Annexure L / Form M4755 layout.
| Line | Amount | % contingency |
|---|---|---|
| Base estimate | $54,117,750 | |
| Total project cost, current $ P50 | $56,488,906 | 4.4% |
| Total project cost, current $ P90 | $60,496,434 | 11.8% |
| Total out-turn P50 / P90 (factor 1.0767) | $60,820,527 / $65,135,356 |
The estimate category check flags the 11.8% P90 contingency as below the expected range for a Category 3 (business case) estimate in PCEM Table 3.3.7: exactly the prompt a reviewer would raise. The sheet also carries contingency monitoring (§10.1.21) and the certification block.
04.3 · NSW: INSW Cost Control Framework
Method: risk drivers. Tier 1 (HPHR), funded at P90. Schedule QRA required and linked.
| Measure (outturn) | Amount |
|---|---|
| ETC P50 / P90 | $63,100,787 / $67,713,115 |
| Mean (CBA central case) | $63,257,370 |
| P50 contingency, held by the Project Director | $4,833,239 |
| P90 − P50 contingency, agency senior executive | $4,612,328 |
| Escalation rates +1% p.a.: ETC P90 change | +$1,406,874 |
| Deferral by 1 year: ETC P90 increase | +$2,031,393 |
04.4 · Victoria: DTF RTCC
Method: risk drivers (HVHR business case: parametric with probabilistic risk events). Escalation sits inside the base risk estimate.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Base cost estimate (BCE) | $54,117,750 |
| 5.1 Escalation to P50 (base risk) | $4,494,020 |
| 5.2 Project risks to P50 (base risk) | $4,489,017 |
| P50 estimate (BCE + base risk) | $63,100,787 |
| 6 Excess risk estimate (TEI level − P50) | $4,612,328 |
| Total estimated investment (TEI) | $67,713,115 |
The TEI confidence level is assumed to be P90 because the RTCC guideline does not name it; confirm with DTF. The project / department / DTF split of the excess risk estimate uses placeholder percentages.
