Count Markers

Count markers are tally-point annotations for counting identical items on a drawing — chairs, lights, doors, trees, parking spaces.

Workflow

  1. Tools → Measure → Count.
  2. A Count Group dialog asks for:
  3. Group name (e.g. "Pendant Lights").
  4. Marker icon (dot, cross, star, custom).
  5. Color.
  6. Click OK. The tool stays active.
  7. Click each item on the drawing. A marker appears at every click; a running count appears in the status bar.
  8. Press Esc to stop counting for this group.

Starting a Second Group

After finishing one group, start again with Tools → Measure → Count to open a new group. Each group has its own name, icon, color and count, so you can track:

  • Pendant lights: 42
  • Recessed lights: 87
  • Emergency exits: 6

Reviewing and Editing Counts

Counts Panel

View → Counts panel (or View → Measurements List → filter to Count) shows every group with:

  • Group name
  • Color / icon
  • Count
  • Show / hide toggle
  • Jump to first / last marker
  • Rename / recolor / delete

Removing a Single Marker

  1. Switch to Select tool.
  2. Click the marker.
  3. Press Delete or right-click → Delete.

The group's count decrements.

Moving a Marker

Select and drag, like any annotation. Moving doesn't change the count.

Deleting a Whole Group

Counts panel → right-click group → Delete Group. All markers in the group are removed.

Visual Style

  • Default marker: 10-pt dot in the group color.
  • Custom icons are loaded from your marker library (add via Settings → Marker Library).
  • Markers always render above other annotations (they're small and should stay visible).

Count Limits

There's no hard limit, but groups with over 500 markers may slow down rendering on low-end hardware. Spark virtualises marker rendering — only markers near the visible viewport are drawn.

Export

Counts export to CSV from the Counts panel (or via the Measurements export). Each row is one marker with:

  • Group name
  • Page number
  • X / Y (page-relative coordinates)
  • Notes (if any)

Comparing Counts Across Sheets

If you count on multiple pages:

  • Each page has its own set of markers per group.
  • The group total across all pages is shown in the Counts panel.
  • "Go to First / Last" jumps to the first/last marker in the document order.

Common Workflows

Electrical Takeoff

  1. Count Pendant Lights (red dots).
  2. Count Recessed Lights (yellow dots).
  3. Count Emergency Exits (blue star).
  4. Export CSV to your estimator.

Furniture Inventory

  1. Count Desks (green).
  2. Count Chairs (orange).
  3. Count Monitors (purple).

Each group keeps its total; totals are independent.

Tips

Tip

Tip — Use Filter by color in the Counts panel to isolate one group visually and hide the others while you verify the count.

Tip

Warning — Don't double-click when placing markers — each click places a marker, so a double-click creates two overlapping markers. Spark does not de-duplicate automatically.
